John: Ouch!

For the record, Time Machine will back up everything BUT your File Vault encrypted home folder, regardless of whether you're logged in or not. But anytime you're logged in and you go to shut down your machine or log out, it should have tried to do a backup.

I understand the technical reasons why Apple had to do it only on log-out. Hopefully they'll figure out a way in the next release to work around those.

Amazing how we see these wonderful blogs only AFTER the damage is done. I was told yesterday that I'd lost my data; due to that very fact you've just mentioned. Dont use File Vault and if you do log out first before backing up. Not only was my Macbook Pro stolen only three months after converting to Mac from PC, but now I'm the prize idiot with my firm for having lost the entire last 3 months of work.

I'd suggest throwing it in the trash. If it's something like a Microsoft Word file that has lots of stuff you can't part with, then I'd buy a commercial virus scanner. They can sometimes repair infected files, removing only the virus-y part and leaving the rest.

Hey Joe,

Nice blog man. Are you still updating it? I don't work with Apple much but I really enjoy video editing. I quick browsed through some of the articles and found some really useful links.

Anyway thanks for linking us in your blogroll! (CPU Solutions) Later man.

[...] If you just picked up a new drive, it will probably be formatted to work best with a PC. It will still work on a Mac, but not ideally. And Time Machine will probably complain and ask you to reformat it. It’s easy to do and I’ve got instructions here.
Teri:

If I'm right, that scanner uses the dreaded "Canoscan Tool Box". I've never been very impressed with that piece of software. It looks like the "SANE" software I'm talking about in this article does support your scanner. Give it a try and see how it works. Worst case scenario is you're back to where you are now.

As for new scanners, I'm not much of a connoisseur. Generally, Epson has pretty good software and HP consistently has really bad Mac software (even for their printers). I can't speak to how good the scanning quality is, but my impression is that most scanners are "good enough" these days.

My canoscan scanner is old N124ou. the software works once and then i get a message cannot detect scanner. when i restart my computer i can scan again? i have an imac os 10.4.11. I see on your blog you recommend downloading software for image capture devices. I was thinking of trying that short of buying a new scanner...i use photoshop alot and in my artwork often rely on scanned images. is there a scanner you would recommend that has good software for photoshop users?
