John: Ouch!

For the record, Time Machine will back up everything BUT your File Vault encrypted home folder, regardless of whether you're logged in or not. But anytime you're logged in and you go to shut down your machine or log out, it should have tried to do a backup.

I understand the technical reasons why Apple had to do it only on log-out. Hopefully they'll figure out a way in the next release to work around those.

Amazing how we see these wonderful blogs only AFTER the damage is done. I was told yesterday that I'd lost my data; due to that very fact you've just mentioned. Dont use File Vault and if you do log out first before backing up. Not only was my Macbook Pro stolen only three months after converting to Mac from PC, but now I'm the prize idiot with my firm for having lost the entire last 3 months of work.

Hey Joe,

Nice blog man. Are you still updating it? I don't work with Apple much but I really enjoy video editing. I quick browsed through some of the articles and found some really useful links.

Anyway thanks for linking us in your blogroll! (CPU Solutions) Later man.
